Mission Statement
The Primary mission of the Ashland County-City Environmental Health Division is to prevent and control the spread of communicable disease by maintaining a safe and healthy environment through the enforcement of state and local regulations and through the education of the public in matters related to individual and community health.
The staff is composed of registered sanitarians and clerk/secretary.
Each sanitarian is responsible for conducting the environmental health programs within his/her designated area of program concentration.
Education
The sanitarians present lectures and conduct workshops related to
environmental health. They work with local news media to promote good
public health. As a part of this program, the sanitarians will, upon request, test home microwave ovens for leakage. Brochures and other educational information concerning all aspects of environmental health are also available from the health department at no cost to the public.

Water Supply
The sanitarians review plans for and inspect the installation of private water
supply systems. They license and inspect private water hauling equipment
and test drinking water for harmful bacteria. The sanitarians also cooperate
with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency in the review of the installation
of commercial water supply systems.

Food Service/Vending Operations

and vending operations. In cooperation with the nursing department the
Food Service Program Manger investigates all food borne illness complaints.

Camps, Public Swimming Pools, and Manufactured Home Parks
The sanitarians, in cooperation with the Ohio Department of Health, review
plans for, license, and inspect all campground, public swimming pools and
manufactured home parks.
Solid Waste
The environmental health division, in cooperation with the
Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, inspects the
Ashland County Landfill. The Program Sanitarian inspects infectious
waste generators. Construction anddemolition debris sites are included
within this program along with composting facilities.
Animal Bites/Vector Control
The sanitarians investigate all reported domestic and wild animal bites.
They also attempt to control nuisances and diseases caused by insects,
rodents, and other pets.
Complaint & Nuisances of Public Health
The environmental health division investigates and attempts to abate all
reported nuisances involving matters related to public health.

Schools/Institutions/Tattoo/Body Piercing Establishments
The sanitarians inspect the sanitary and maintenance conditions of all
schools and some other public institutions, such as the Ashland County Jail.
They also license and inspect all tattoo and body piercing establishments in
cooperation with nursing staff.
Indoor Air Quality
The primary role of the environmental health division in the area of
indoor air quality is to provide guidance and educational materials to assist
in the prevention, assessment, and mitigation of health issues related to
indoor air quality problems in residences and schools.
Indoor air pollution can cause health symptoms ranging from irritated eyes,
nose and throat to asthma. Indoor air quality is affected by pollutants such
as mold, carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds (VOCS), radon, lead,
asbestos, and tobacco smoke.
