“No fall is too small…” At our falls prevention classes, we tell our students “no fall is too small to call your doctor.” When you fall, it’s an opportunity to address what may have caused the fall. Sometimes it’s obvious…you tripped over a pair of shoes left by the door. Sometimes, it’s not as obvious…you started a new medication that interacted with another medication, or you developed a new medical condition. When you know why you fell, you can take action to prevent a similar fall in the future. Even if you haven’t fallen, be sure to talk to your doctor if you feel unsteady or are concerned about falling. You can take this Falls Free CheckUp to check your risk for a fall.
We teach several free courses that focus on improving your balance, flexibility and strength while teaching you how to prevent falls.
We offer A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls. This 8-week course meets once a week for 2 hours. In this course, we will teach you how to control your fear of falling, how to set realistic goals for increasing your activity, and how to change your environment to reduce your fall risk factors. Sessions 3 through 8 features mild to moderate exercise meant to improve your balance and mobility.
We also offer Stepping On. This is a 7-week course that meets once a week for 2 hours. Stepping On has been proven to reduce falls by 31%. This course features guest speakers, including a physical therapist, pharmacist, and a community safety expert. Participants will learn 4 strength and 4 balance exercises that are adapted to their fitness level.
Please call 419-282-4231 and ask for Jean or Jill if you are interested in signing up for either of these courses.
